AdSense crawlers

By Unknown09:36 No comments

Our AdSense crawlers

index each individual URL containing the AdSense ad code in order to deliver relevant ads to that page. If your site is dynamically generated using a program language such as PHP or is created using information from a database, we'll still be able to target each unique URL with ads specific to the content of that page.

However, the following types of dynamic sites may need modification to receive targeted ads : Dynamic pages that use the POST method for form submission

Sites using the POST method use the same URL for many different content pages. To allow us to target the content of each unique page, we recommend that you change these pages so that your variables are passed through the URL using the GET method. Sites that are behind a login and personalized to a specific user If your site is behind a login,

you'll need to allow our crawler to access the content on these pages by explicitly granting it access. Dynamic pages with session IDs Sites that append a session ID to a user's URL may encounter problems displaying relevant ads. Session IDs can increase the load placed by our crawlers on one's server due to the manner in which our system indexes pages. We recommend removing session IDs from your URL to help resolve this issue. If you continue to see no ads on your dynamically generated pages, they may be appearing as the result of another issue.

Ad code implementation

Create a custom-sized ad unit

While responsive ad units allow you to change the size of the ad based on the size of the browser, with custom-sized ad units you can specify the width and height of the ad that you want to appear on your page.
To ensure that ads continue to deliver a positive user experience, we’ve put a few restrictions in place around theminimum and maximum pixels for ad sizes. Any custom sized ads that fall outside of the restrictions below won’t appear when placed on a page.
To create a custom-sized ad unit:
  1. Generate the ad code.
To generate the ad code for a custom-sized ad unit:
    • Create an ad unit in the usual way, making sure to select “Custom ad size” from the Ad size drop-down and set the desired width and height for your ad unit in the process.
  2. Place the ad code on your site.
Copy and paste the ad code into the HTML source code of your page where you'd like the ad to appear.

Tracking the performance of custom-sized ads

You can track the performance of your custom-sized ad units the same way you track the performance of standard ad units, which is by viewing the Ad sizes report on your Performance reports tab.

About custom-sized ad units NEXT: CREATE A CUSTOM-SIZED AD UNIT

If you’re looking for a specific ad size that’s not one of our standard ad sizes, you might want to create a custom-sized ad unit. With custom-sized ad units you specify the width and height of the ad that you want to appear on your page. Custom-sized ad units behave just like their standard size counterparts, showing a text or display ad depending on which will have the best performance for the impression. Note that custom-sized ad units are fixed sized ad units, i.e., they don’t dynamically change their size or respond to changes in screen orientation. If your site uses responsive design, we recommend that you use a responsive ad unit instead.
You should consider using custom-sized ad units if you: Have a regional ad format that we do not offer in the AdSense interface Need a custom size to better fit the layout of your page. Certain custom ad sizes such as a 120x60 might not have any display ad inventory available. Please take this into consideration when deciding whether to use a custom ad size as it could have a negative impact on your earnings. Policies and restrictions To ensure that ads continue to deliver a positive user experience, we’ve put a few restrictions in place around maximum and minimum pixels for ad sizes. Any custom-sized ads that fall outside of the restrictions below won’t appear when placed on a page.
Custom-sized ads are required to adhere to the AdSense ad placement policies. Additionally, the following size restrictions will be enforced:
Only one dimension can be greater than 300 pixels The minimum width is 120 pixels The minimum height is 50 pixels Neither height nor width can exceed 1200 pixels. Please note that we may change these policies. If you implement custom-sized ads, please check back here to ensure that your sites are in compliance. As always, please use your best judgement when using custom-sized ad units; ad units similar in size to the 300x600 ad format will be subject to similar placement restrictions. Ads will not be served to ad units in violation of these restrictions. Bear in mind that the look and feel of your text ad units will depend on your ad unit dimensions.
Example ads Text ads
For text ads, custom-sized ads will behave similarly to the standard formats you’re used to seeing. We’ll determine the optimal number of text
ads to display for a given impression, and show the ads the same way they appear inside standard sizes. Here are three examples of custom-sized ad units displaying text ads:

10 Alternatives to the Amazon Associates Affiliate Program

#10 Alternatives to the Amazon Associates Affiliate Program

There are dozens of affiliate networks out there, but one of the most widely known and widely used is Amazon’s affiliate program. With good reason; it has a lot going for it, least of all the immense brand recognition of carrying the Amazon name.
Still, there are a few good reasons why you might want to use a program other than Amazon. Heck, you might just want to use one in addition to Amazon, to double up on your potential earning power through different means of marketing.
Let’s take a look at Amazon’s Affiliates program, what makes it good, and what you can replace it with should you desire to do so.

Why Amazon is a Great Affiliate Program

Amazon Associates Pros
Before we get into negatives and alternatives, we should first discuss what makes Amazon Associates a great affiliate program. I do this not to convince you of the greatness of Amazon, but to show you what you should be looking for in another program if you want it to compete with Amazon.
It’s easy to set up and get running. It’s only a matter of minutes to set up an account, and you don’t need to pass some detailed inspection of your site as a publisher. Many affiliate programs vet their publishers, because they don’t want spam sites and sites with low volume on their system. Amazon doesn’t have to worry about that; they’re big enough to take the hit from low volume publishers, and they can filter spam sites on an ongoing basis. You can have a functioning account set up in a matter of minutes.
It has a lot of tools, features and reports. Amazon is a provider of a lot of cloud-based services, including significant resource-hogging processes, so data analysis and reporting is no problem. They do lack real time reporting, which is unfortunate, but the reports they offer stretch back as far back as 2008 and are very granular. That’s not to mention the tools that make it easier to use Amazon affiliate links. These days it’s a one-button process to generate a custom affiliate shortlink you can use on your site.
Amazon is one of the biggest and most trusted brands in the world. This is something no other affiliate program can replicate, though some will come close. Amazon has global name recognition and trust. People feel a lot more comfortable buying something through Amazon than they do through a third party website or a small business site. Amazon has a whole host of price match guarantees, support options, return policies and deals to back up its position as a global retailer. As an Amazon affiliate, you can take advantage of all of those as additional sales factors as well.
Some valuable products can have exceedingly high commissions. One of the big gripes about Amazon is the low commission rates, but I’ll talk more about those later. Here’s the thing; Amazon hasn’t been just about books in a very long time. Sure, 4% of a $3 book isn’t a lot. On the other hand, 4% of a $10,000 piece of electronic equipment is significant. You’re not stuck getting pennies on sales of nearly free ebooks.
Amazon seasonal sales can dramatically increase your conversions. Two words: Black Friday. Amazon is chock full of sales and deals, from their standard sales to their preorder bonuses to their seasonal extravaganzas. As an affiliate marketer, you would typically be unable to take advantage of sales, or would find them actively harmful. With Amazon, they’re so good they can’t help but benefit your site.
You can find just about anything you could possibly want to sell. How many products would you guess are on Amazon at any given time? Recent statistics indicate a number around 250 million items. That’s an insane number, considering you can make a commission off of pretty much all of them. No matter what you want to sell, you can find it on Amazon, and you can earn a commission for selling it through them.
You can earn commissions on products you didn’t sell. This is perhaps the best part. With most other affiliate programs, you need to sign up for an offer an sell that product through that offer. If the customer goes on to buy something else, you get nothing. With Amazon, anything the user buys when they reach the site after you refer them will earn you a commission. You could refer them for a $10 book and they remember they wanted to buy a $1,000 TV; you get the commission on the TV as well.

Editor’s Amazon Associates Review

Arguably the largest affiliate network on the Internet, Amazon Associates offers products from over 1.6 million sellers. And the program boasts hundreds of thousands of affiliate publishers. Still, the main knock on Amazon’s affiliate program is that its commissions are just far too low. Publishers start at a 4% commission rate (though the rate can get as high as 15%, based on volume); so this is an all-too-common yet valid gripe. That said, mixing in the right offers on the right type of site can bring in some nice incremental revenue, particularly if volume is high and/or users are already in the buying cycle. Like other affiliate networks, Amazon Associates pays out on a CPA basis. But unlike other affiliate networks such as CJ or LinkShare which may pay out on leads or other non-sale actions from time to time, Amazon Associates only pays on completed sales, making it a true cost per sale (CPS) network. And as already mentioned, the commission rate for new publishers starts at 4%. But as sales volume increases, commission rates also increase, up to as high as 15%. On low-cost items such as a $20 book, at a 4% commission rate, the affiliate publisher sees a pretty paltry 80 cents in revenue from the sale. Commission revenue does start to add up on high-ticket purchases such as a $500 camera ($20 commission); or when users fill up their shopping carts with more than just that $20 book (affiliates collect commissions on all items purchased, not just the single linked-to product); or if volume is particularly high. Low commissions aside, everything else about Amazon Associates is top-notch, starting with dead-simple, yet highly customizable link and banner creation. Amazon offers its affiliates the ability to create custom banners and links for any product page on Amazon.com, allowing publishers to send their users exactly where they would want to land on Amazon’s website. Besides product-based ads, there are also general-use category- and promo-based ads that affiliates have the option to use. For power users, Amazon Associates offers widgets and aStore. Widgets give publishers the ability to create interactive ads that allow users to search, rotate through numerous products, browse deals, find new music, and more. Creating an aStore is a feature that allows affiliates the opportunity to set up their own stores hosted at Amazon.com. Like creating standard banners and links, setting up widgets and aStores is fairly easy and straightforward. For highly skilled developers, Amazon Associates offers a Product Advertising API, which allows access to Amazon.com’s product selection, product discovery capabilities, customer reviews, Listmania lists, and more. The affiliate control panel is also easy to use and offers reporting that is on par with all of the best ad networks. Simple to use, affiliates have the ability to generate simple earnings reports based on any period of time (no matter the length), or more detailed reports such as orders, referrals, link-type reports and more. Pretty much any report you would want is available and fairly easy to generate. Customer service at Amazon Associates is very good, if not great. It misses out on getting the highest marks due to the fact that affiliates are not assigned a real person as an account representative. Additionally, there is no email address to contact for support. But, there is a phone number that affiliates can call for help, as well as a support contact form, and a live chat feature, which is uncommon among ad networks of any type. This live chat can be especially helpful if you’re stuck on something simple that may only take a minute or two to solve. The live chat feature is available seven days a week, from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m Pacific Time, which should be convenient for most. Unlike contextual display ad networks such as Google AdSense, implementing ad units from Amazon’s affiliate network may not work for all Web publishers. Those who have the greatest success with Amazon Associates are typically either product review sites whose users are already in the buying cycle and/or high-volume sites with a high trust factor. It’s not for everyone, but the program is highly reputable and that warrants testing at the very least.
